Practical Advice on not Knowing What to Do
By Maurizio Bisogno
Have you already found yourself unable to decide if your intention was a capability to manifest or it was just wishful thinking? It is when you can’t decide whether you are daydreaming or creating something. The question expressing this situation could be “Is this a wish or a potentiality waiting to become a reality?”
In this state you appear incapable of finding the road to follow and the work method to apply. The risk here is that you could follow the “gambler” attitude. You try your chance by putting yourself totally in the hands of luck. Someone else could choose the opposite, I mean they could adopt the workaholic way, spending an enormous amount of energy without getting a satisfactory result.
How to get out of this? Some people are solitary achievers, they like to walk alone, others are more gregarious and prefer to be in a team, collaborate and share with others their efforts and goals. I would say you should ask to which type you belong.
You would think about your vision, your general goal in life. What is your ideal lifestyle? Is your vision supporting you? Do you have a larger picture in your mind depicting how life should be?
Without a direction, even when coming out of a victory you remain dissatisfied about your future. Your partial successes make sense when they are part of the bigger idea, otherwise they are just a succession of small pleasures.
For example, can you integrate in your work the activities that you enjoy or aspire to do? Do you use in your job the skills you have? Is it possible to include them in your present main activity or should you consider a different occupation? If you are happier working on your own and the nature of your present work requires mainly teamwork, how are you going to solve this conflict? Maybe you should consider the possibility that it is your role in the team that is dissatisfying; in this case, are you a leader or a follower? You must have a clear mind about these facets.
The wish to do, without having a precise idea, it does add meaning to your life also it makes you feel stuck instead of making you act.
“Indecision is fatal. It is better to make a wrong decision than build up a habit of indecision. If you’re wallowing in indecision, you certainly can’t act – and action is the basis of success.” – Marie Beynon Lyons Ray
In conclusion, you must create a clear picture not only of the partial objectives but also of the larger idea you should have of your life. I found also useful the following thought: I don’t need to be where there is already someone who is doing what I want to do.
Without a well-defined direction your intention will not take form in your mind and in your reality.
Getting into the habit of sitting down and define how your day should be it is good, but it will not give you the meaning of your life, this latter will come from the ultimate goal, from the broad picture – so, you should reflect on this as long as you need until you see it clearly, your vision will put into places the various smaller goals creating consistency and integrity.
