The World We Know

by Maurizio Bisogno

We experience the world through our body, although we are not passive recorders of it. The ancient Greek word pathos refers to the wrong response to the external impressions. The correspondent verb is pathein, to suffer: we do not just suffer what happens in the world. In other words, we are not solely a receiver of what happens “out there”.

We are a constituent of what we experience. Our responsibility in the making of our world starts at the most basic phase of our ability to perceive through our body. In fact, we interpret constantly and selectively the inputs coming to us and from us.

In this sense, pure objectivity is an unfulfilled wish; simple facts a necessary reduction of what is the totality of the phenomena. In order to grasp some reality, we need to select; our mind cannot seize the whole of it. We choose and by doing so we do not merely create our world, we create ourselves, we define who we are.

When we were born we where thrown in an unknown reality; since then we attempt to produce a consistent image, a reliable understanding of what is the world in which we were thrown – and we do so until we die. Our acts, our thoughts and our emotions are choices me make incessantly and they are the builders of our world, of our experience and of what we are. Even if we believe in a previous and an afterlife, we can only remember fragments of it, disconnected parts that require our reconstructive mental and emotional ability.

My book “Introduction to Philosophy” is a path within a world of ideas and interpretations which started 2600 years ago in the Ancient Greece. Philosophy is an adventure of the mind which has never stopped since its inception with first philosophers. It would be a monumental impossible task to write an all-encompassing volume about all the philosophers and their productions. My book “Introduction to Philosophy” gives you a possible path that will introduce you to a possible grasp of what is Philosophy; by walking this narrow path the reader will discover its surroundings and will receive stimuli and insights to walk other parallel or intersecting paths.

The book is divided into parts: the firs one explores the initiators of Philosophy, those who set out the entire agenda for the Western way to know the world and ourselves. The second part can be defined as “philosophy practice”, in the same sense one says “doctor practice”, “law practice”. This second part is developed in another book entitled “Philosophy Practice in Action”. Both these volumes are available on Amazon. Hundreds of articles are available on www.mauriziobisogno.com
