They are predictable tendencies that arise from the same mental shortcuts in the same kinds of situations — which means they can be anticipated and, to a degree, compensated for.

Psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky spent decades cataloguing these patterns. Their work demonstrated something uncomfortable: biases are not a sign of low intelligence. What it is: Continuing to invest time, money, or effort in something primarily because of what has already been spent on it, rather than because of its future value.

What it looks like: Staying in a failing project because your team has already put six months into it. Finishing a bad book because you are two-thirds through. Remaining in a career that no longer fits because of the years already invested in qualifying for it.

Why it is so damaging: The past cost is genuinely gone. No future decision can recover it. The only rational question is: does continuing forward make sense from here? But the brain experiences abandonment as waste — and avoidance of that feeling overrides logical analysis.

How to counter it: Reframe every continuation decision as a fresh choice. Ask: if I were not already involved in this, knowing what I know now, would I choose to begin it today? If the answer is no, the sunk cost is pulling you in the wrong direction.


4. The Dunning-Kruger Effect

What it is: The tendency for people with limited knowledge in a domain to overestimate their competence, while genuine experts tend toward underconfidence.

What it looks like: Someone who has read three articles on economics feels equipped to explain monetary policy. A novice investor, after a few lucky trades, feels they have mastered the market. Meanwhile, experienced practitioners are acutely aware of how much they do not know.

What it is: The tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information encountered when making subsequent judgements.

What it looks like: A salary negotiation opens with a number — that number becomes the reference point for everything that follows, regardless of its appropriateness. A product marked down from €500 to €300 feels like a bargain, even if €300 is still overpriced.

Why it is so damaging: Anchors work even when people know they are being anchored, and even when the anchor is arbitrary. The initial number shapes the entire subsequent conversation without appearing to.

6. The Halo Effect

What it looks like: A confident, well-dressed candidate seems more technically competent during an interview. A company with an elegant brand seems more likely to produce a quality product. An author whose first book you loved seems more trustworthy on topics outside their expertise.

Why it is so damaging: Hiring decisions, investment choices, and professional relationships are routinely distorted by irrelevant surface impressions — and the people making them rarely notice.

How to counter it: Evaluate attributes separately and explicitly. When assessing a candidate, score communication skills and technical skills on independent criteria before forming an overall impression. Compartmentalisation is the antidote.


7. In-Group Bias

What it is: The tendency to favour people who belong to the same groups as you — professional, cultural, ideological, national — often without conscious awareness.

What it looks like: Giving more weight to the analysis of a colleague from your alma mater. Trusting a news source more because it reflects your political identity. Attributing good intent to people you identify with, and bad intent to those you do not.

Why it is so damaging: It distorts hiring, collaboration, and trust in ways that compound over time — and because it feels like loyalty and shared values, it is particularly resistant to self-examination.

How to counter it: Ask, when evaluating a person or source: would I apply the same standard if they came from a different background? Swapping the group identity in a scenario — while keeping all other facts constant — can reveal whether your judgement is tracking the relevant evidence or the tribal signal.


A Note on Self-Awareness and Its Limits

Knowing that a bias exists does not make you immune to it. Research by Kahneman and others is clear on this point: awareness helps, but it does not reliably override the underlying mechanism. The sunk cost fallacy still pulls at you even when you can name it.
